The first reported sighting of Tasmania by a Tasman was on November 24, 1642 and Able Tasman named the island, Anthoonij van Diemenslandt, after his sponsor. After the British landed and settled the area, to remove the stigma of the Dutch, the name was eventually changed to honor the first explorer to sight the land.
