Tasmania start steadily against Victoria in Ryobi Cup
Tasmania and Victoria are up against each other in the Ryobi One-Day Cup being played at Hobart in Australia.
The match is being played in a unique format. Both teams will bat for 45 overs but each team will play two innings in the match. The first innings will be of 20 overs each and then both teams will bat for another 25 overs in the second innings.
Tasmania won the toss in today’s match and decided to bat first in good batting conditions. The wicket seemed to have good bounce but not one which could trouble the batsmen.
The Tasmanian innings got off to a poor start. Rhett Lockyear edged one from Dirk Nannes and was held safely behind the stumps by Victorian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade. Lockyear took the long walk back to the pavilion without scoring a single run.
The first-drop Ed Cowan was also unimpressive as he only managed to score one run in nine balls. He also edged the ball into the safe hands of Wade, but this time the bowler was James Pattinson. After the fall of two quick wickets, Tasmanian Captain George
Bailey joined opener Mark Cosgrove at the crease.
The pair played steadily and made sure the team didn’t lose any more wickets in the first innings of the match. Cosgrove played his shots when he had the opportunity while Bailey continued to rotate the strike.
Both players constructed a solid 73-run third wicket partnership for Tasmania and took the total to 80 in their first innings of 20 overs. At the end of the innings, Cosgrove and Bailey were unbeaten on 48 and 30 runs respectively.
Cosgrove will be looking forward to capitalise on his start and make a big score in the match after he resumes his batting in the second innings. He struck five beautiful boundaries in his knock of 48.
On the other hand, Bailey played sensibly and didn’t look to take too many risks. He struck two fours in his innings. He will also be eying a big score once he resumes his innings the second time around.
The attack bowlers were terrific for Victoria. Nannes finished the innings with figures of one for 23 in six overs. Pattinson also bowled well and took one wicket for 21 runs in his six over spell.
