Tatiane Mayumi Sakemi wins Women’s 100m breast-stroke semi-finals – 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy
Tatiane Mayumi Sakemi of ECP/SABESP won the semi-finals of Women’s 100m breast-stroke swim on day two of the 2011 Jose Finkel Trophy on August 31, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
The 25-year-old Mayumi Sakemi surfaced as the fastest swimmer of the breast-stroke discipline, as she submitted a top qualifying time of 1 minute and 11.38 seconds to enter the final round. Her effort was 6.93 seconds above the world record of 1 minute and
04.45 seconds, made by Jessica Hardy of USA in 2009. In addition, the fastest qualifying swimmer was also 1.54 seconds behind her own national mark of 1 minute and 09.84 seconds, set by Sakemi, during 2009.
She was trailed by Renata Paula Sander of FIAT/MINAS, who was just 1.60 seconds behind the fastest swimmer and reached the final round with a second fastest timing of 1 minute and 12.98 seconds. Similarly, Sander edged out her strongest competitor and her
team-member, Juliana Marangoni Marin, by posting a third best qualification time of 1 minute and 13.19 seconds.
Sakemi was the second fastest swimmer in the first lap of the race, as she ended her initial lap in a time of 33.92 seconds behind Sander, who posted 33.86 seconds on the board. Nonetheless, the 25-year-old swimmer stunned the aquatic crowd and emerged as
the top contender for the gold medal by gaining a comfortable lead over her competitor in the second lap.
In the meantime, Sakemi’s team-member, Juliana Marangoni Marin and Michele Sambugari Schmidt of CORINTHIANS/S.BERNAR transpired as the fourth fastest swimmer to enter the final round. The duo presented an exhausting effort to escape each other on the finishing
wall but they were unable to achieve that and they simultaneously hit the wall for fourth spot. They remained only 0.39 seconds behind the third finisher and posted a same time of 1 minute and 13.58 seconds to enter the final round.
Moments later, the pair was chased by Beatriz Azzolini Travalon of ECP/SABESP, who earned sixth qualification berth into the final round by reporting in a time of 1 minute and 14.03 seconds. Lais Rodrigues of C.CURITIBANO/PR was the seventh fastest swimmer
of the event, as she was only 0.13 seconds slower than her foregoing competitor and produced a time of 1 minute and 14.16 seconds. Likewise, Marin’s team-member, Thamy Ventorin appeared as the eighth fastest finisher of the discipline, as she qualified into
the final with a timing of 1 minute and 14.67 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended after the incredible swims of all participants who engaged each other in a thrilling battle, to confirm their spots in the final round.
