Tatjana Vasiljeva set to face Wendy Jans in the final clash of 2011 European Ladies Snooker Championship
Latvia’s Tatjana Vasiljeva will meet Belgian snooker star, Wendy Jans, in the final of 2011 European Ladies Snooker Championship on Friday, June 17 at the Dedeman Hotel in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia.
Vasiljeva has become the very first player from Latvia to reach to the final of a European Championship.
Both the ladies had a decent run during their respective group stage matches to make it to the playoffs. They belonged to the same group, Group A, and have played against each other before, where
Jans grabbed the victory over Vasiljeva.
Vasiljeva and Jans defeated Malta’s Roberta Cutajar 4-2 and the French cueist, Christelle Pedat, 4-0 respectively in their semi-final clashes.
Vasiljeva grabbed the second position in the group after Jans, with four wins, before she moved to playoff stage. She stormed into the final match after beating Linda Lassaut 3-0 in the Last-16 round,
Diana Stateczny 4-2 in the quarter-final and Roberta Cutajar 4-2 in the semi-final match.
The Vasiljeva-Cutajar semi-final encounter was a thrilling match, as both ladies stumbled upon each other impressively during the match. A couple of superb knocks of 47 and 37 along with some small
ones from Vasiljeva put Cutajar 4-2 down in the semi-final.
On the other hand, Jans played amazingly throughout the championship as she topped her group with five victories, including one over her final opponent Vasiljeva. She surged into the final stage of
the event and there too she made a strong impact.
The 28-year-old cruised into the final match beating Maria Loizou 3-0 in Last-16, Inese Lukashevska 4-0 in the quarter-final and Christelle Pedat 4-0 in the semi-final.
Jans’ semi-final match-up was totally dominated by her as she didn’t let the French potter, Pedat, come at the table much and swept it sensationally with 4-0 and made her way to the final match against
Vasiljeva.
Since Vasiljeva had to suffer defeat at the hands of Jans in their group stage match, that makes Jans a favourite to lift the title. However, Vasiljeva would have something Jans wouldn't; revenge
on her mind, and that might just prove to be a deciding factor in the latter's game.
