Question:

Tattoo while underage with parental permission?

Okay, I'm 16 and I want a tattoo.

My mother says she'll let me and we found an artist who'll do it for me. However, my mother is obsessed with not doing anything illegal. My question is, is it illegal for a minor to get a tattoo if my mom approves? Would she be doing anything illegal?

I live in Illinois, if that matters.

If it isnt illegal, I need proof, please.

Oh, and I'm emancipated, if that matters either..

  1. Since you are emancipated, then you are considered an adult.  However, usually at tattoo places, if you are a minor, they will have a parent or legal guardian sign.  So, just have your mother sign the paper.  Do you have court papers indicating you are emancipated???

  2. how on earth can you know what you want inked on your body when you're 26, 36, 46, 56, 66, 76 years old, when you're 16 now?

    please, dont do it

most people regret tatoos when they're older

    save yourself the trouble

  3. as long as your mom approves it, it is ok but she does have to sign a wavier.

  4. It is illegal.

  5. Most reputable shops will NOT tattoo a minor, with or without parental permission, whether or not you are emancipated.  Being emancipated means different things in different states - it doesn't necessarily mean you have common sense and doesn't protect the shop from being sued by the parents for disfiguring their child should they later decide they don't like the tattoo.  Wait the 2 years.
