  1. Hi Janie. You can definitely get tattooed over scars. Here's my story. I'm tattooed over 4 keloid scars on my chest. Keloids are large, raised, hard, red scars. It hurt ALOT over the scars. But the result is awesome! The scars hold the ink perfectly...not one bit of running or fading. I love my tattoo and get nothing but compliments on it. I do suggest finding an artist that has done scars before. I think that makes a difference. My scars were at least 7 years old. I think as long as they are completely healed, you can go ahead and tattoo them. Good luck!

  2. Most proffessional tattoo artists will not tattoo over things such as scarring, stretch marks, cellulite, self-inflicted tattoos or places in which the ink is likely to 'run' or fade fast (such as the soles of the feet or the webbing of the fingers.)

So especially if your scars are raised and red - you're unlikely to find a pro who'll tatoo over it.  Sorry.

  3. U should get it done that sounds cute

    can you help me?

  4. On LA ink they have done tattoos over scars

  5. What happens if the ink runs? it runs! thats the risk you take and theres nothing you can do about it! if the scar was the same color as the skin and not raised it really wouldnt be a problem but since it is red and raised, its probably not a good idea to tattoo over it. i dont think the artist will look at you funny. most know there is a story behind tattoos and he'll probably get your story. its not like you are the first person in the world to get a tat representing you overcoming a self-harming stage in life.

  6. goodness me- what a lot of questions!! lets go one at a time!

If the ink runs and its a light colour, you have a touch up- if its black or green or dark then its not so easy to cover.

It hurts more than anywhere else I've ever had tattooed but still not enough that i couldn't bare it.

It kinda matters if they're red, means they haven't stopped healing- you really should wait for them to silver out (go white)- the raised bit isn't so much the problem.

Your tattooist has most probably seen a lot stranger things than an arm with some scars hun!

The tatt sound really cool- depends on your scars really. if you have lots of thinnish lines from cuts then not such a problem, but any larger patches of scar tissue might be. The scar tissue doesn't really take fine line work/ detail too well as it does bleed a tiny bit in the very best ones, and i mean tiny but enough to maybe blend two close fine lines.

I'd really suggest you go see an artist or two and get some proper opinions- and advice.

I hope it all works out and you love your ink when its done.
