Tatyana Chernova and Darius Draudvila prevail as TNT-Fortuna Meeting gets underway - Athletics news
The most entertaining feature of sports is the element of surprise that they contain and it is always fun to see one’s favourites emerging on the board, but it is equally amusing to see new players prevailing as victors. This was exactly the way how first
day of the TNT-Fortuna Meeting unfolded and left the event’s spectators amazed.
The competition is regarded as the third leg of the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge. The event kicked-off on June 15 and except Russian Heptathlon specialist, Tatyana Chernova, no one among the pre-favourites of the challenge could fulfill the expectations
of their fans. As the first day of the event concluded, along with Chernova, it was Lithuanian Darius Draudvila, the newbie, who surfaced as the leader of the day.
Chernova, the 23-year old heptathlete from Russia, who carries a personal best of 6618 points, marked at the 2008 Hypo-Meeting held in Gotzis, maintained her status as favourite of the competition. With her new personal best in the 100m hurdles, she succeeded
in hitting 3882 points and if she manages to mark another personal best in the 200m run, she is definitely going to add up to an already formidable total.
Just like the women’s events, the challenges on men’s side also produced some surprising results, as none of the favourites could live up to the expectations of their fans. As the first day of the event concluded, none of the two formidable athletes, Andrei
Krauchanka or Leonel Suarez, was there on the top of the board.
It was the sixth finisher of the European Championships held in Barcelona last summer, Draudvila, who stole the limelight. For ending the first day as a leader, he 4225 points on the board.
The history of the TNT-Fortuna Meeting has never witnessed diversified results in terms of assessing the potential athletes who contain the required talent and are fit enough to emerge as winners in the event. However, now it seems that the tournament, which
has become an introduction to Kladno, Czech Republic, has started attracting some surprising performers as well, which, of course is an underlying success of the event.
