My kitten has a heart murmur. I've read that extra taurine can help. Any ideas on if there are supplements?

  1. there are some at pets mart

  2. There are supplements for Taurine for cats. Do a google search to find out more about it.

  3. Taurine is an amino acid that cats require for a multitude of body functions. Unlike most other mammals, they can not produce their own reliable supply. In the wild, they get an adequat supply of taurine from eating mice and rats, which typically have an abundant supply of taurine in their brain and bile. While it does contribute greatly to preventing a specific form of cardiomyopathy (heart enlargement), putting your cat on an over-the-counter supply (which may not be from a reliable and consistent source, nor be 100% bioavailable) is risky business. Definitely consult with the veterinarian who diagnosed your kitten with this heart murmer, and discuss whether or not "dilated cardiomyopathy" could be a cause, and whether or not taurine would be a worthwhile investment.

  4. Ask your vet becasue some things are risky. There are tests to see if they are allergic and if the cats body will react well to the medicine. i wouldn't risk it becasue it could do more harm than help.
