Tavo Hellmund supports Bernie Ecclestone’s idea of artificial rain in Formula 1
Tavo Hellmund, the organiser of the 2012 US Grand Prix has recently admitted that he is supporting Bernie Ecclestone’s idea of having artificial rains during some of the races in Formula 1 in the future.
He believes that the idea is ‘brilliant.’
Ecclestone has stated that it is going to be easier make racing exciting and control the weather according the organiser’s will. He suggested that by having sprinklers by the side of the tracks, the organisers can create a ‘rainy environment’ during the
race whenever they want.
It is funny as the FIA cannot restrict the sun from shining no matter what they do and even if they create a complete replica of natural rain during a race artificially, the element of uncertainty would be removed from the sport. If the FIA decides to keep
their ‘rain schedule’ for a particular race undisclosed to the teams, then most of the teams would step up against this rule as the rain would not favour each and every team on the grid which would make the planning of weather control during each race ‘biased.’
The reason why the fans like rain is that it is uncertain and it changes the whole scenario of the race due to its unpredictable nature. Artificial rain will not be uncertain for sure and other than that, the FIA would lose the ‘charm’ of a rainy race as
a result of which, rainy races would also becoming boring with due time.
It is believed that the new US track that is being built in Austin, Texas currently might also have this system in it. Ecclestone stated that it would be ‘easy’ to create this system at ‘a number of tracks.’
“True talent always shines in the wet. The smaller teams should rejoice as rain is the ultimate equalizer, eliminating size of budgets and allowing pure talent to shine,” stated Hellmund.
He thinks that wet weather racing is spectacular because of which he believes that this idea is brilliant.
Since Austin is in the early stages of constructions, Tavo believes that it would be possible to incorporate this system in the track. However, one has to admit that installing this system at most of the tracks of the sport is not going to be easy at all
since the tracks are quite big and installing such a system and expecting an efficient response from the system is quite unrealistic.
