Tax Breaks or benefits?

My Mother lives with me and she was just declared legally blind and i was wondering if anyone knows if there are any tax breaks for her or any benifits that she can get .

  1. Her standard deduction will increase by $1,050.


  2. She gets a larger standard deduction.

    $1050 if married, $1300 if single.

  3. If your mom isn't already on social security, I'd first check with the social security administration about getting diability benefits for her.  Also, some insurance companies have a payment amount for loss of sight - check with whatever insurance company your mom has to see if they participate in that.  The other two answers on this page are correct - there is an additional tax "benefit" for being blind and/or over 65.  I'd also check with your state to inquire of any benefits your mom may be eligible for. (Or you, if you are her care-giver) Good luck!
