Tax ID number?

Question

First, in order to get one, do I have to be a business owner? I just started a pretty successful venture on E-Bay, so obviously I don't have business paperwork on it yet to show. (who knows how long it will last).

Secondly, if you do need to have one, can you get a driver's license with it like a regular SS#?

You can get an EIN on line at the IRS website.  You don't HAVE to unless you have employees, but it's better than sharing your SSN with the world so it's always a good idea.

It's ONLY used for tax purposes.  You can NOT use it for a drivers license or any other purpose.
