Question:

Tax Return/Stimulus Check?

I was a dependent in 2007 and claimed on my parents tax return... but I also worked, and earned somewhere around $4,000.00 ... I have to request a new W-2 from my previous employer because I lost it, so I don't know exactly how much I made... and I don't have my other W-2 handy... I'm in the middle of moving back from college! Friends filed their taxes who couldn't have made much more than me got returns as well as a stimulus check. I looked on the IRS website and you can file until the 15th of Oct. I don't really know about getting money back or anything because my parents always pay taxes, they are in a high tax bracket. I'm not really looking for rude replies saying how I should have filed my taxes earlier or I should know... I don't really understand why people post irrelevant things, obviously I have a question and would like an answer! Thanks :)

  1. Once you file your 2007 taxes, you should be eligible for a tax refund based upon the information presented.  Be sure to use an address where you know that your mail will be received.  If you still live with your parents when you are not going to school, use their address.

Since your parents claimed you as a dependent, you will not get a rebate check.

  2. You are a dependent - you aren't eligible for a stimulus payment, so filing won't get it for you.

  3. If your parents claim you as a dependent, you will be ineligible for the rebate, but you may still benefit under the plan.

While the rebate depends on your 2007 status and income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, taxes would be cut in 2008 from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.

So if you have taxable income in 2008, you will see a tax cut when you file in 2009.

  4. You are not eligible for a rebate since you were claimed as a dependent.  Sorry.

Edit:  If any taxes were withheld from your pay you'll receive a refund of those when you eventually file.  You have up to 3 years to claim a refund due.  However you are confusing a refund with the rebate.  They are different.  You're eligible for a refund if too much tax was withheld from your pay, but you are NOT eligible for a rebate because you are a dependent.
