can he write that off as a tax deduction

no...but if he gives you more then 12,000 in a year, he might have to pay taxes on the additional gift over the presrcibed amount.

No, of course not.  But you don't claim it as income either since it's a gift.

Only gifts to a qualified charity are deductible.

No.  The best thing that he can hope for is that it counts towards the "support" test and he may be able to claim you as a dependent.
