Question:

Tax id number for adsense

I am planning to get a tax id number to give to places like adsense, instead of my social security number, and I have a few questions. When I apply for this number, will the government treat it as just a number for filing my taxes. Also will it force me to file taxes every year, even if I am under the minumum amount to file. Last, will I still be able to file taxes as a person, and claim the adsense income as personal income. I do not own any businesses, or anything like that.

  1. You can get an EIN if you wish.  You'll still use your SSN to file your tax return though.  The IRS will link your EIN and SSN so anything reported to them using your EIN will show up under your SSN as well.

An EIN is only required if you have employees OR if you form a new legal entity such as a corporation or partnership.  Neither of those would make sense for Adsense.

You only need to file if your income for your filing status exceeds the filing requirement amount.
