Question:

Tax in the UK?

I am currently working through a temp agency in London. I have not yet recieved my NI number and am working off a temporary one. My agency is taking 22% taxes off my paycheck. I am making £12 and hour here so I am not in a very high tax bracket. I have called to ask them about this but did not recieve a straight answer.

My question is: does anyone know the going rate for tax deductions in the UK for my income bracket? would I be getting taxed more because I am working off a temp NI number? WIll I be able to get any of this back? And if so, when?

Thanks Guys

  1. Your NI number is not used for tax calculations.  Your tax is calculated using your tax code.  If you did not have a P45 form when you started working, or complete a P46 form, you will be on an emergency code which normally means you will be taxed more than usual.  You can't be being taxed at 22% unless you are including NI, the current income tax rates are 10%, 20% and 40%.  You should have a tax free amount (your tax code), 10% on part of your income and 20% on the rest.  If you have been overtaxed, you will get it back, either your tax code will be re-adjusted or you will get a rebate after the tax year or you code will change next year, might depend how good your tax office is.

  2. This is normal. You are being taxed at Basic Rate until your tax code has been worked out.You will get a rebate if one is due
