last year 07 i worked a couple of jobs and i waited untill late feb 08 to make sure i got all the w2s or whatever to file my taxes. i cant remember all the details but when i gathered all my info to go file i thought that one of the w2s might be missing and if that is so i would have had to pay in alot more than i did $8. what do i do and when will the irs let me know if that was the case?

  1. If it is not a large amount then you have nothing to worry about, in 18 months from the time you file IRS would send you a CP2000 for under-reported income.  You would have to owe hundreds for IRS to issue a Cp2000. Relax you don't have anything to worry about if it is only $8 you would owe.

  2. If you reported the correct income and just forgot to attach a copy of one of your w2 it probably isn't a big deal and they may not even contact you.   I think the irs gets a copy of a w2 from your employer. However if they discover that you under reported your income and its a signifigant amount they will probablly call you and ask you why you didn't report it correctly. Just let them know it was a mistake and your more that willing to correct it. You'll have to download the forms and redo your taxes and may have to include a small fine

  3. Request an income transcript from the IRS (form 4506-T).  Compare it to your tax return.  Forgetting a W-2 can cause you to owe money.  So it's better to find out now than a year from now.
