I'm getting married in august. Can we file as though we are both single.. just for that year.. since we didnt get married until august...

  1. No, it's your status as of the end of Dec 31 that determines whether you must file as married for the year or not.


  2. Your filing status is based on your marital status on the last day of the tax year.  In other words, if you get married in August and stay married through the end of the year, you will be filling as either Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately.

    You sound like you would rather file apart from each other.  MFJ is a very favorable filing status.  If you have a concern about that, you may want to ask another question with more specifics about your concerns.
