  1. The single person's tax allowance is £5434 per year, so if your annual wage is less than this you do not pay income tax.

  2. you have a tax allowance around 5k a year and even earning around £160 a week you will not earn 5k between now and April 5 2009 so you will not be liable for tax this year, also working 30 hours you will be entitled to tax credits which will boost your income further

  3. Personal allowance is £6035.

If you earn less than this, no tax is due.

  4. If this is your first employment this year, you will have 6 months tax credits to use before you are liable for tax.  Just dont get to use to the extra money you are curently recveiving

  5. I don't know what planet 2006Mum is on! Two possibilities spring to mind. Are you a student who has signed form P38S? This may explain why employer not deducting tax. I assume you are on more than £3 an hour, therefore, even if you signed form P38S, employer should deduct tax on those wage levels. When I was working I had a case like that once, and employer had to stump up a lot of money to pay employee's liability, as he was not operating PAYE correctly.

You may have a backlog of tax allowance back to 6th April, the start of the tax year, if you have only now started your job. Does employer show a code on your payslips? If so, is it 534L? If that is the case, he may be operating correctly, and as your tax allowance backlog is used up, you will start paying tax.
