Question:

Tax refund not completed what can I do?

The IRS has stated it takes 8-12 weeks to complete my 06' amendment. It was received on March 25th in their GA office and then re routed to TN a month later. Now I'm being told that if I don't hear anything in 30 days to contact a taxpayer advocate. My question is what is the problem? I'm being transferred and shoved while people complain from 8am-10pm about a rebate and all I want is my overpayment back in the time the IRS stated. I've even been told that if people would stop calling about their rebates amendments could be processed. What can I do?

  1. Well, lets see...... the 12 weeks isn't up until next week, so it isn't due yet.  And when you say it was received 3/25 is their GA office and rerouted to TN a month later, it sounds like maybe you sent it to the wrong address - if that's the case, the 12 weeks wouldn't start counting for that extra month.

Good luck.  Amenments take a lot of time to process, and this year they are taking even longer because of the huge number of stimulus returns and stimulus amendments.

  2. The IRS is truly back logged this year due to the rebate package. Evryone seems to have given you the best solution which is to be patient.  A lot of people have filed a 1040x for 2007 and they have to be processed by hand which can take a bit longer.  Sorry for your delay.

  3. The IRS has a huge backlog of amended returns. I suggest simply being patient and allowing them to do their work.

  4. Patience, IRS is trying to finish processing all the 2007 timely filed tax returns to give people their refunds and issue their rebates.

IRS takes 12 weeks to process amended tax returns, remember IRS works Monday thru Friday.  So count 12 weeks from the date IRS received your amended return.  Another thing that has delayed the processing of your amended is it was mailed to the wrong service center.  Not all service center work amended returns.

FYI: TAS can't do anything about getting your amended return processed, all they do is call or send a request to the Tax Examiner that you have contact them and will ask them for a time when they think they will be able to finish processing your return, then they may call you or send you a letter.  TAS takes 30-45 days to get back to you.

  5. Patience.

Even if this is escalated to the taxpayer advocate, there is a limit as to what they can do.  Someone with authority to make a decision and actually change your account has to do it.

And yes, with the rebate this year and no extra personnel, the IRS is busy doing other things.  With 50,000 extra phone calls a day, they even pulled people from doing actual work to answer the phones....Heck, it didn't help that thousands of extra people are filing 1040X forms for 2007 (because they wouldn't wait until all the forms were ready) even before the announcement of the stimulus.
