  1. There is no tax relief for working abroad.  You have to become nonresident, which depends on much more than simply totting up the days.

If it does come down to a day count, it is up to you to prove you were out of the country.  Keep overseas hotel bills; air/ferry tickets; boarding card stubs; a decent contemporary diary including lists of where you were, what you were doing, and who you were doing it for and with; credit card slips overseas; bank statements showing cash withdrawals from foreign ATMs - and anything else you think might be helpful.

  2. Tax relief on what income? Employment?

If you go and work abroad, then your salary is not liable to UK tax if you meet the non resident conditions and you have no duties in the UK. If this is the case, then you need not declare the income to the UK.

If you work abroad but for a UK employer, and meet the conditions to be non resident with no UK duties, then you can request a code NT be put into place.

You should fill in a form P85 to notify your tax office that you are leaving the UK, and a P86 on your return to the UK. This will let your tax office know how to treat your tax affairs.

The non residence conditions are in booklet IR20, chapter 2.

    P85  is at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/p85_p85s.htm

You might want ot keep copies of plane tickets, bills, etc from while you were outside the UK.
