Question:

Tax return, is it too little too late?

Due to a filing mistake made by Jackson Hewitt when I initially filed taxes at the beginning of the year, the government owes me almost a thousand dollars. I was to mail it to the Department of Treasury. I just relocated the envelop, which is yet to be mailed. I am going to mail it anyway, whats the worst that can happen, but is it likely they will give me what they owe?

  1. If when JH redid it, they filed an original return rather than an amendment, then that should have been fine, there would be no reason to send i the first one and it would just be rejected anyway, and you should have had your refund a few weeks after it was filed

If they filed an amendment, but you hadn't sent in the original yet, then the AMENDMENT would have been rejected since there was nothing on file to amend.

Soiunds like you need to talk to someone at JH if possible, to see what was really done, then send in whatever needs to be sent.  In any case, once the paperwork gets straightened out and the right stuff sent to the IRS, you'll get what they owe you.

  2. You can file a 2007 tax return.

The due date to get a refund is 4/15/2011.

  3. Curious: how did Jackson Hewitt make a mistake on  your initially filed tax return?  Did you not review the return before signing it.

Have you not filed your 2007 return at all yet.  Then no problem mail it out today.  You will be issued a refund if you  are due one, at this time it is taking IRS longer to get return filed so be patient you may have to wait up to 12 weeks to receive your refund.
