Question:

Taxation of cars in DC? Why so cheap?

Is there any hidden taxation while buying an old car in DC? I found, for example, a good car for $5000 which is extremely OK with me but I wonder why some cars are so much cheaper than they are in Europe? And do we have to pay extra taxes while buying them or are there any surprise expenses like big amounts for insurance, etc?

  1. Well, here's a list Fees and Taxes charged,

As you can see, unlike some of the other nearby states like Delaware, DC does charge Sales Tax 5.75% So that's not a factor. If the car was c**p or had ton of miles on it, the price is likely to down. If you had mentioned the car, I'd be able to explain more.

As to the insurance, well it depends on Car make model & year. Other than miles on it. But DC is not like NJ in extorting Insurance. So no surprises that I know of. Unless the Dealer sprung something. There's a list of Surprises dealer can throw in that link.
