Hi,

I am going on holidays to Canada for a few days and I intend to buy some electronic goods ( LCD HDTV, and some electronic stuff ). since the prices are a bit cheaper, much better than 'Rip Off Ireland' Prices.

On returning, do I need to pay taxes and customs at the airport, will the custom authorities ask me to declare my goods? Any comments or advice please...

Regards.

  1. You don't have to worry about Canadian customs on your way back, but most likely your own customs in Ireland will "get you" on your return trip and you will have to pay taxes and duties there.  Do you need to also remember to buy a converter for the different electrical outlets in Ireland?  Or are the outlets in Ireland different from the UK but the same as Canada?

  2. That will be up to the Irish customs where and when you pay the taxes on the goods you are importing into Ireland.  Most countries have a threshold of goods you can bring in to the country after an extended stay away.

I'm sure you know this already BUT it does need to be said Canada like America runs on 110 vac 60hz NOT 240vac 50hz like the UK and Ireland.  Also our TVs are NTSC and not Pal or SCAM so they won't work overthere either.  I do not know about HD or if you use the composite, component or S video inputs from a receiver over there would a monitor work  , I suspect not.  Also you probably have a problem with car radios being that the digital tuning  over here stops on the odd dicimal frequencys eg 104.5 Mhz.  Playstations have a country code in them so the games won't work.  About the only electronic things that will work for you are the ones that need a wall adapter because you can get the appropriate adapter over there to make them work.

  3. Canadian airports?  No you don't have to pay any taxes since you already paid that when you purchased  the item.  You have to check your own customs though (Ireland) and make sure you know how much are the duties.  Make the necessary calculations and see if Canada bought goods are worth bringing in to Ireland after you paid the duties.

Keep in mind also that in Canada you have to add GST and PST (around 13%) coz they are not included in the price tag.
