Question:

Taxes different when working full time vs. part time?

I currently work full time (40 hrs a week). I'm thinking of working part time (25 hrs a week). I looked at my most recent paycheck and divided the total amt of taxes withheld by my gross pay. It was roughly 20 percent. Would i still be taxed 20 percent if I worked at approx the same hourly rate, but only 25 hours a week? I live in California.

  1. Most likely the rate will be somewhat lower.  It's likely that you'll either be in a lower tax bracket and/or the effects of your exemptions and deductions will be more significant with the lower gross income.

  2. No - your annual income would be lower, so your the overall total percentage should go down.

You can go to www.irs. gov and look for Publication 15.  That will give you the withholding calculation tables.
