Taxes in UK?

Are taxes higher in UK than Australia? I am not too sure of this b/c at least the income tax is definitely higher than UK...But someone told me about NHI taxes, etc...which sounds complicated...

And if you buy products in a UK shop, for example, like 5 pounds, do u just pay 5 pounds? or do u pay extra tax?

In Australia, we just pay the amount that's written - so if something costs 2 dollars, we pay 2 dollars in Australia

  1. Cash & Carry shops  often display prices excluding VAT

Most shops display the price you pay (incl VAT).

Foodproducts often have no VAT (but not all foodproducts).

The Vat rate is 17.5 %, but for certain foods and even books 0%.
