How do the taxes on buying a car work? Is it your standard state plus county tax rate you would pay on anything else?

  2. Yes, it's the same tax rate you would pay if you bought, say, a new TV -- in most states. A couple of states have a maximum allowed sales tax on car purchases. Some have no sales tax at all -- such as in Georgia for cars purchased from an individual, not a dealer.

    Check your state's DMV web site for the tax laws in your state.

  3. We don't have county taxes. All we do is pay 5% which is less than our state tax of 6%.

    Plus we have to pay registration and plates. Plus, we have to pay taxes on our vehicles every single year. (WV)
