  1. Don't walk down any dark alley's by yourself.  Those winding cobblestone streets get dark, even in the daylight hours.  It's better to make a female Roman pal,(fluent in English, if you're not fluent in Italiano), ..especially if you're going to need to taxi around everywhere.  The taxi drivers will sometimes take advantage of you if you're foreign.

  2. Fiumicino is the same as Leonardo da Vinci Airport.

The last comment on this page is most important:

"You may be approched by illegal taxi drivers in the station and at the airport. If you need a taxi, look for the official white taxis which have meters. There are taxi stands at both Fiumicino and Termini."

  3. Rome is a very safe place you know. Lots of police about. Not sure what it would cost but keep about 30 Euros handy. I'd advise you to learn a few words of Italian as not all the taxi driver speak English. Here's a good site if you want to speak to some Italian Nationals. There're nice people of all ages and will advise you alot better than I can. Ps the main criminal element to watch out for in Rome is pickpockets. Keep your money hidden and safe.

  4. I would do an airport shuttle.  Are you staying at an hotel? because there are airport shuttles that I've been taking the last 2 times I've been to Rome.  So, I saw do that.  I'm not a big fan of Taxis.

  5. it will cost around 30 euro and yes, it's safe, much more safe then in any part of new york in day light.

  6. I traveled alone when I was 19 which was 10 years ago now. I always felt safe, just be smart and seem confident where you are going. Do not put out a map in public if you can help it. And Italian men really will be aggressive with flirting with you. I recommend staying at youth hostels and meeting people you can travel with. I am not sure how much a taxi is, but you can take a train from the airport for just a few dollars. Rome is very walkable around the center, and public transportation is always cheaper. Rome has a great underground which will be much cheaper than a taxi.

  7. I would set up a car service through your hotel or do it on your own. I hate to say it, but a young woman traveling alone has a very good chance of being ripped off by a taxi driver. If the taxi driver is honest the rate should be about 45-50 euro. There is an big highway that goes around the city of Rome. From the airport the taxis are allowed to charge a higher rate until they reach the ring, but many apply the higher rate the entire length of the trip. The meter will show 70-85 euro. Even if you try to the tell driver he may pretend like the he doesn't know what you're talking about. Starting your trip arguing with a cab driver is not the way to go. Try Roma Shuttle for decent rates.

You should feel comfortable walking around by yourself. The men will flirt with you. Just ignore them, unless of course you are interested!

  8. taxis are rip offs.. Take the train thats in the airport takes u straight to termini (main train station) in rome. Its cheap and u wont get ripped off.  If u get in the taxi make sure he turns on the meter.

  9. Are you staying at a hotel?

Most hotels have arrangements with local drivers/taxis (if not their own shuttle) and charge a flat rate for your trip.  While it might be a little more expensive, it will get you to the airport most efficiently.  Better than trying to find a taxi on your own.

If you are super adventurous, I would suggest that you head to Termini Train Station and take the airport train to the airport.  It drops you off inside the airport.  It's cheaper than a taxi and more fun too.  I think it runs ever 15 or 30 minutes to the airport and starts at 6am I think and runs until very late.  Buy your ticket from one of the self service machines or from the ticket window.  Couldn't be easier!

Yes, Leondardo da Vinci Airport = Fiumicino

  10. it would be safe but pretty expensive. the fare depends on where you have to get into rome, rome is quite big! and depending on the hour you might get stuck in the traffic. for hours! so i suggest you to take a train, it leaves every 15 minutes/half an hour, its quicker and cheaper (5 or 8 euros), and it takes you nearly everywhere. look for "stazione fs" or "stazione treni".
