Taylor Corry conquers Girls 100m freestyle title: Day three – Australian Age MC Championships
The 16-year-old Taylor Corry showed her urgency towards the finishing wall in the 15 to 16 years old Girls 100m freestyle playoff on the last day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class (MC) Championships. The championship was held at the Australian Institute
of Sport (AIS), in Canberra, on Sunday, October 9.
Corry of NSW Nelson Bay outperformed her competitors in the freestyle discipline as she hurried towards the finishing wall for the title of the event. Corry’s efforts placed her comfortably ahead of her competitors, who had their sight affix towards the
title of the event.
Corry, S14, was the first swimmer to take-off from the starting blocks. Her outstanding stroke and unmatchable power provided her with a huge lead over her challengers. She ended her initial lap of the race in a time of 30.15 seconds and remained 5.18 seconds
faster than her rival, Ashley McConnell of VIC Melton.
McConnell tried her best to give a tough time to Corry, but she failed to match Corry’s pace in the second-half of first lap. After the first turn, Corry sprinted her way towards the finishing wall, completing her second-half in a spectacular time of 33.92
seconds.
With her superb swim in the final lap, Corry confirmed her gold finish as she clocked a time of 1 minute and 04.07 seconds. Her effort was 8.95 seconds ahead of 15-year-old McConnell, who ended her second lap in 37.69 seconds to clock 1 minute and 13.02
seconds on the board.
McConnell, S9, was trailed by Tinita Wilson of QLD Woogaroo, who also remained considerably slower than her former finisher, but was able to touch the finishing wall and secure bronze medal. Wilson, who falls under the disability class of S14, appeared on
the finishing end, submitting a time of 1 minute and 20.04 seconds.
Corry’s irresistible effort in the freestyle event made her the centre of attention for everyone. In addition, the gold medallist showed keen interest in training hard and representing her nation at the 2012 London Paralympics.
