Taylor Garcia claims Girls 50yard freestyle gold – Michigan Girls High School State Championships
Taylor Garcia of Holland High School claimed the title of Girls 50yard freestyle in Division 2 at the 2011 Michigan High School State Championships on Saturday, November 19.
The 9-year-old Garcia entered the final round as third finest swimmer but with her immaculate efforts, she easily reached the podium for the crown of the 50yard event. She earned the title of freestyle discipline in a fantastic time of 23.46 seconds.
With her irresistible efforts, she remained 0.84 seconds slower from the Division 2 record of 22.62 seconds, made by E. Bos in 2008. She also remained 1.42 seconds slower from the All Class record of 22.04 seconds, owned by K. Joyce from 2002.
The gold medallist was traced by her team-member, Holly Morren, who was only 0.16 seconds behind her and reached the podium for silver medal with a timing of 23.62 seconds.
Meanwhile, Heather Kiger of Milan High School appeared as the third position holder of the event. The 12-year-old Kiger remained just a nail away from overwhelming her former finisher and hit the wall with a third fastest timing of 23.76 seconds.
She was followed by Catherine E DeLoof of GP South High School, who was 0.01 seconds slower from her foregoing competitor and ended fourth with a timing of 23.77 seconds.
Moments later, Garcia once again appeared on the starting blocks for the 100yard butterfly, where she clocked a time of 54.39 seconds for gold medal. She was chased by 12-year-old Kiger, who remained 1.99 seconds away from her and stepped on the podium for silver medal with a timing of 56.38 seconds.
The third spot of the race was secured by Haley Kornburger of Oxford High School, who stayed 0.81 seconds behind the silver medallist and appeared on the podium for bronze medal with a timing of 57.19 seconds.
Haley Shaw of Fenton High School was the fourth finisher of the butterfly event as she produced an effort of 58.48 seconds.
In addition, the crowd was contended with the heart-winning efforts of all finalists, who tried to escape each other on the finishing end for top positions in their respective events.
