Taylor Knox defeats Kieren Perrow to enter Rip Curl Pro Search Semi-Finals – 2011 ASP World Tour
After a series of exciting battles, the latest stop of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, came down to the crucial Quarter-Finals stage. The stage opened up with America’s Taylor Knox taking on the in-form Australian, Kieren Perrow, for the coveted Semi-Final spot at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Monday, November 7.
It turned to be an extremely thrilling affair as both the surfers kept challenging each other until the very last minute. In the end, however, it was Knox who came up with the winning performance to go through, consequently bringing an end to Perrow’s impressive run.
The 40-year-old Knox had been quite inconsistent at the 10th stop of the elite ASP Tour. The first round of the competition had seen him falter, though he did manage to make a strong come-back to stay alive in the event. Struggling to find his momentum as the event progressed, the seasoned American surfer tasted defeat in Round 4 once again and was forced to take the longer road to get into the Quarter-Finals.
Perrow, on the other hand, had shown a much more reliable form and though he had faltered early in the competition, he had recovered quite well and looked to be in great touch since then. The contest was expected to go down to the wire during the clash of the two surfers.
With clean high-performance three-to-five foot waves on offer, the first Quarter-Final got under-way. Perrow took little time to read the conditions and soon attacked a wave to score a 6.33 off it. Knox turned out to be up for the challenge and immediately responded strongly by catching a juicy wav e and unloading a string of exquisite manoeuvres to post an 8.33 on the score-board.
The determination of the two quarter-finalists became even more evident as the heat progressed. Entering into the final minutes of the battle, Perrow made yet another charge and this time added an additional 6.50 points to his account, moving into the lead with a heat-total of 12.83 points.
Almost out of time, Knox locked his final wave with the intent of getting enough score off it to move past his rival on the score-board. Much to the joy of the local crowd, he managed to squeeze a 6.63 off it, which took his heat-total to 14.96 points and consequently sealed the fate of the first Quarter-Final in his favour.
