Taylor Martinez expected to be back against Kansas Jayhawks
Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Bo Pelini says that he expects starting quarterback Taylor Martinez to be back in the line-up when the club takes on the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday 13 November.
Martinez was forced out of the Cornhuskers 31-30 overtime victory over the Iowa State Cyclones on 6 November, with an ankle sprain he sustained in week nine against the Missouri Tigers.
Nebraska was forced to start third-string quarterback Cody Green against Iowa State after it was revealed that Martinez would not be able to make the start and back-up quarterback and last year’s starter Zac Lee was still struggling with an injury to his
throwing hand. Nevertheless, the Cornhuskers were able to pull out a very tight victory over a conference opponent.
Martinez took over at quarterback as a freshman at the beginning of the season and has been a major reason for the club’s offensive success. The Cornhuskers run an option offence, which is only possible because Martinez is such a strong rusher of the football.
Martinez’s abilities have helped the team to the sixth best rushing offence in the country, averaging 288.1 yards per game. Moreover the team has the 13th best offence in the nation, averaging 31.1 points per game.
Nebraska has been a force in the Big 12 and currently leads the Big 12 North at 8-1 with a 4-1 conference record. The 2010 season has been a particularly successful one for the Cornhuskers, who are preparing to leave the Big 12 in order to join the Big Ten
for the 2011 campaign.
With three games remaining, the Cornhuskers have already garnered bowl eligibility, are ranked eighth in the Bowl Championship Series standings and have one game left against a ranked side.
So far this season, Martinez has managed 1,161 passing yards and nine touchdowns and has rushed for over 100 yards five times.
