Taylor Phinney continued his dominance in the Pink Jersey at the Giro d’ Italia 2012
Taylor Phinney of Team BMC is having a terrific Giro d’Italia. The cyclist succeeded during the opening stage of the race and earned the leader’s jersey.
He lost crucial 30- seconds towards end of the stage 2 after a crash in the final 8 kilometres of the race.
However, the American’s first stage lead was enough to sustain the Pink jersey after the stage 2 classifications.
He was looking good during the 190 kilometre stage 3 of the race but was unfortunately caught up in a crash that took a number of cyclists including the stage 2 winner, Mark Cavendish.
Phinney finished the race at the last spot but managed to secure the overall classifications lead yet again after the end of the stage 3.
Taylor cited, "I’m better now, when I was on the ground I was a bit confused and in a state of shock, but I started to feel better when I was in the ambulance".
"I must have hit something when I fell. It’s a pity that it happened and hopefully it’s nothing important. It’s lucky tomorrow is a rest day".
The cyclist is now leading the category with a huge lead of 9 seconds over Geraint Thomas of Team Sky Procycling.
Alex Rasmussen of Team Garmin-Barracuda is further 4 seconds behind at the third spot with Manuele Boaro of Team Saxo Bank and Ramunas Navardauskas of Team Garmin-Barracuda holding the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Matthew Goss of Team Orica-GreenEdge managed to secure the first Grand Tour victory for the Australian team.
He explained, "It's my second Giro stage win. It's great to win here in a pure bunch sprint. I'm very happy for the team”.
“There were a lot corners in the finale, that always strings the bunch out but I had a great team".
Taylor is now eyeing the team’s time trial stage 4 of the race to continue his dominance at the overall classifications.
The 32.2 kilometre stage 4 is scheduled after the first rest day of the race and will it will be interesting to see if Phinney succeeds in defending his overall dominance at the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
