Taylor Phinney fit to continue the Giro d’ Italia after the stage 3 crash
Taylor Phinney badly injured his right ankle after he crashed during the stage 3 of the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
The cyclist was having a dry season but managed to find his winning ways at the opening stage of the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
His first victory of the season came during the team’s time trial stage 1 of the Giro del Trentino and he continued his dominance at the first Grand Tour race of the season.
Taylor was rushed to the hospital in Verona to perform an x-ray on his injured foot immediately after the crash.
However, the Team Doctor Dario Spinelli has reported that the cyclist has survived any broken bones and is likely to resume the race at the coming stages.
"We'll take another look at his ankle later today and see how it's healing”.
It's definitely good that this happened before a rest day, since the transport and treatment process took so long”.
“Taylor will enjoy a good night of sleep without the stress of having to get ready to race".
Phinney was part of a massive crash that involved numerous cyclists including the stage 2 winner Mark Cavendish of Team Sky.
The cyclist finished at the bottom list after the stage 3 of the Giro but managed to continue his lead at the overall classifications.
"I’m better now," Phinney said. "When I was on the ground I was a bit confused and in a state of shock, but I started to feel better when I was in the ambulance".
"I must have hit something when I fell. It’s a pity that it happened and hopefully it’s nothing important".
The 21-year-old has taken full use of the rest day and will hopefully be seen in action at the coming stage of the race.
He is leading the category with a total lead of 9 seconds over Geraint Thomas of Team Sky Procycling.
Alex Rasmussen if Team Garmin-Barracuda is holding the third position with Manuele Boaro of Team Saxo Bank and Ramunas Navardauskas of Team Garmin-Barracuda holding the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Phinney is now eyeing the 32.2 kilometre team’s time trial stage 4 of the Giro d’ Italia and the cyclist is determined to defend his overall lead at the contest.
