Taylor Phinney hopeful to represent USA at the London Olympics 2012
Taylor Phinney claimed that his major objective for the coming season is the London Olympic Cycling time trial participation. He is well aware of the tough competition and understands the fact that he needs to go through a tough competition even to qualify
for the event.
He told cycling news, “I’m going to be gunning for the Olympics next year and we’ll see how realistic my chances are there as the year progresses”.
London Olympics are approaching and it makes it real hard for most of the teams to pick their best players as choices are limited.
The American team is no different, as selectors are already having a tough time to finalise their squad.
They have to choose from the experienced, Zabriskie and Leipheimer, or any other young rider for the mega event.
The selectors have to choose one of their best riders to ensure that they are nothing short of spectacular, as the world’s top sprinters will meet to fight for the gold medal.
Taylor mentioned that he will leave no stones unturned and ensure his best performance right from the start of 2012 to prove that he is the best man to represent USA in the Olympics.
The 21-year-old was impressive during the time trial at the Vuelta a Espana 2011. He finished 4th overall at the Eneco Tour 2011 along with a second prologue at the Tour de Romandie.
He finished fifth at the 2011 Vuelta a Espana time trial stage and also believes that the deserving rider shall be given the opportunity at the Olympics.
Phinney mentioned, “I think whoever has a standout performance, they’ll take them. I know the automatic selection is if you have a top 3 in a time trial over 45k in a time trial. The only time trial of that sort is at the Tour and if you look at my fifth
from the Vuelta this year that was the best result of the 2011 season”.
Taylor mentioned that he will do his level best to secure the maximum number of wins to his credit in the 2012 season, which is the only way to ensure his place in the coming London Olympics 2012.
