Taylor Phinney of Team BMC briefed his Giro experiences
Taylor Phinney of Team BMC is having a dry season and the cyclist tested his legs at the first Grand Tour race of the race, the Giro d’Italia 2012.
He succeeded during the opening individual time trial stage of the race after his tremendous performance.
Phinney completed the 8.7 kilometre race in a quickest time of 10 minutes and 26 seconds and overcame the race favourites.
Geraint Thomas of Team Sky Procycling fell 9 seconds short at the second position while Alex Rasmussen of Team Garmin-Barracuda, Manuele Boaro of Team Saxo Bank and Gustav Larsson of Team Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling occupied the next three spots.
While commenting on his performance during the 2012 version of the Giro he noted, “By this point in the race, I’d lost the pink jersey and the white jersey and I was kind of hanging on by a thread”.
“It was a medium mountain stage but we still had like 3,500 metres of climbing. It was all really short, steep climbs.”
“I didn’t have a lot in my reserves and I had to dig myself out of a pretty big hole that day”
“That was the day that I finished with Cavendish, 31 seconds within the time limit, so that was a pretty close call. It only got better from that point on”.
Phinney started his professional pursuit with Team Trek-Livestrong in 2008 and stayed with the team by the end of 2010.
He accepted an offer from Team BMC for 2011 season and is continuing with the team for the second consecutive season.
The 21-year-old secured the fourth overall position during the Eneco Tour 2011 and second during the prologue stage of the Tour of Romandie 2011.
The cyclist has not been impressive in the current season and his only victory prior to the Giro stage came during the Giro del Trentino.
He was part of the strong Team BMC that succeeded during the first, team’s time trial stage of the Giro del Trentino 2012.
The American made his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia 2012 and the cyclist has shown interest towards riding the remaining two events of the year.
