Taylor Phinney rejects his home Tour as he opts for Vuelta a Espana – Cycling News
American cyclist Taylor Phinney who did not race in Tour de France because of injuries has made it official that he will be participating in this year’s Vuelta a Espana. It was a surprise for many as the cyclist has to select Vuelta over Tour of Colorado,
which is his home tour.
Phinney has learnt a lot during the time spent in the Anglo-Italian academy based in Italy who has the credit of constructing a lot of other cyclists as well. He mentioned that the 44-year-old Max Sciandri along with some other riders has helped him and
showed him how a professional shall be leading his life as he said about Max, “He showed me how I was supposed to be doing things and I think I only really started acting like a professional in April and at the Tour of Romandie.”
The 21-year-old rider is considered to be as one of the most talented cyclists as he already has several titles to his name. Cyclist has admitted that he has made mistakes in his career that has resulted in crashes and he had to stay out of the sport because
of that. He informed a famous cycling website that he has done several things wrong towards the first part of the season and has wasted a lot of time.
He mentioned that he had been really lazy at the start of the year and was not eating or training like a professional and that was the main reason why he had the injuries. “I was out, buying nice clothes and I thought I was being it but now I’ve realised
I’m a pro and that’s how I have to live,” as Phinney told the media.
Phinney had to decide amongst Tour of Colorado and Vuelta and he has chosen to ride in Vuelta a Espana over his home tour as it will be his first grand tour and that too in his first year as he stated, “I’m pretty happy with how my fitness is in both my
head and legs.”
He said that he is fully confident about his fitness and is positive to dominate the Vuelta as he has learnt from his mistakes and is feeling completely fit before the grand Tour.
