Taylor Townsend and Ipek Soylu qualify for the next round – Girls Juniors US Open 2012
Taylor Townsend defeats Marcela Zacarias 6-0, 7-6
Top seeded, Taylor Townsend rallied past Marcela Zacarias in the third round, summing up 6-0, 7-6(5) win at the US Open Girls’ Singles on the hard courts of New York on Thursday.
The 16-year-old local challenger uncovered her true colours to dominate her rival since the beginning of the set and smoothly cruised forward to secure all the games in set. Townsend broke Zacarias serve three
times and closed the set with an outstanding win of 6-0.
In the next set, the 18-year-old Mexican tried to comeback and squared the score line after every alterative game. She broke Townsend’s serve in the fifth game and tried her best to grab the momentum. However,
the American recovered in the very next game and kept her composure to maintain her following serves. She managed to stamp a breakthrough afterwards and dragged the set in the tiebreaker round.
The right-hander American junior found her rhythm and dominated the tiebreaker round comprehensively. She eventually secured the upper hand and closed the set with a 7-6(5) triumph.
The 16th seeded Mexican contender had an average first serve precision of 66 percent and she converted 23 of 41 points. On the other hand, the local had a relatively better first serve of 71 percent
bagging 29 of 39 points and securing four of the seven break serves in the match.
Ipek Soylu surprises Chalena Scholl 7-5, 7-5
Seeded 10th, Chalena Scholl received a straight sets upset, 7-5, 7-5, at the hands of the Turk contender, Ipek Soylu, in the second round of the Girls’ Singles category on Thursday.
The pair faced each other for the first time but the local challenger greeted her disappointing fate after a close encounter. The Turkish candidate displayed her high spirit since the start and clinched a lead
of 2-love after the initial two games. The score line levelled at 3-all in the sixth game, however, the momentum repeatedly oscillated between the two contenders after that and Soylu eventually emerged to the front line as a victor.
Although the 16-year-old Turkish double faulted eight times, she had a relatively better first serve exactness of 56, snatching 21 of 28 points. The American could merely secure 11 of 20 points and converted
two of nine serve breaks, which was one of the reasons for her failure.
Soylu commenced the second set by maintaining her serve and grabbed a breakthrough by capitalizing her 2-love lead. The American struck back taking the scores to 2-all and started to shift the game in her favour.
Later the Turkish participant nailed a 4-all break in the eighth game and tried her utmost to fritter away the aggression of her opponent. She delivered a critical blow to Scholl at the ending moment and closed it 7-5.
