Taylor Townsend receives an upset by Anett Kontaveit – Girls Singles US Open 2012
Top seeded Taylor Townsend received a surprising crash at the hands of Anett Kontaveit in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2012 held at the hard courts of New York. The Estonian native summed up her 6-4, 6-4
victory on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Girls’ Singles category at the Grand Slam event.
In the opener, Townsend held her initial serve and drew the first blood to bring the score line to 2-1 in the third game. Kontaveit then took a break and started extending her lead. Both the players did not drop
their serves the entire time, except Townsend in the second last game. The encounter between the contestants was real tough one, as the scores levelled three times and eventually Townsend nudged forward to close the set with a 6-4 score.
Kontaveit serve stats were weak in the first set and double faulted five times. She had an average first serve of 54 percent, converting 15 of 28 point and just managed to bag away one of five break points. On
the other hand, Townsend held a 48 percent first serve and she clinched 12 of 19 points.
In the following set, the game progressed in a comparable manner to the opener. The 16-year-old American struggled hard to sustain her momentum as her previous matches in the tournament but this time around,
she appeared ineffective. She evened out the score line twice i.e. in the fourth game to 2-all and sixth game to 3-all. The Estonian native nailed her break in the seventh game by breaking her competitor’s serve in the seventh game and brought the score to
4-3. Beyond that point the American right-hander failed to put up a decent fight and crashed down with a 4-6 defeat.
Although Townsend had a relatively superior first serve of 66 percent, she secured 14 of 21 points on it. She was herself to blame for the loss as she could not even secure a single serve break in the entire
set. Kontaveit capitalizing 49 serve accuracy and one of the four break serves presented to her.
The Duo had encountered each other for the second time this year. The 16-year-old Estonia avenged her earlier loss of this season at the Australian Open. Townsend rallied past Kontaveit in the third round, 6-4,
6-4.
12th seeded Kontaveit will contest against the American Victoria Duval in the semi-finals of the tournament later.
