http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760, following his remarkable performances during the recently-wrapped up ODI series.
"He's refreshed himself and he's worked on a few things and he's in the test side so he'll be pushing for selection," said Taylor. "He's played in every much, so far so he has been the pick of our bowlers and hopefully he can continue on from what he has shown so far and keep leading the attack."
Southee, 23, impressed in the recent one-day leg of the Kiwis’ tour of the United States and the West Indies, and despite his team’s humiliating 1-4 defeat, finished as the series’ second highest wicket-taker, with 10 scalps at 19.60, and an economy rate of 4.57 to his credit. He was also the leading wicket-taker for his side.
Although he remained wicket-less in the first match, the pacer (a veteran of 60 ODIs, with 82 wickets to his credit) claimed three 3-wicket hauls, in the second, fourth, and fifth matches of the series. He also dismissed Jamaican danger-man http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CH-Gayle-c1221 twice – first during the 3rd ODI when Southee dislodged him for 11 in the 9th over, and then in the 4th match, when he sent the belligerent batsman packing, lbw, for 16 in the 7th over.
In addition to his recent ODI performances, the right-armer also has a decent record in Test matches, having claimed 42 wickets in the 17 games he has played for his side in the extended-overs format. His best figures in Tests are a 6 for 150 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 at Hamilton in March 2010.
Judging by his recent performances, and his Test record, Southee could prove to be a valuable addition to the Black Caps’ Test team as they gear up for the final fixtures of the tour. The first Test is due to be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua from July 25 to 29, while the second match will take place at Sabina Park in Jamaica from August 2 to 6.
