While speaking to media reporters on the eve of the match, the visiting skipper conceded that the presence of Vaas has boosted their fast bowling department.
"Vaas has given us an insight into how to play in Sri Lankan conditions and we have a couple of left-arm quicks who are learning a lot off him at the moment, he's been an asset to our group so far," said Taylor at the customary pre-match press conference.
The New Zealand players have a history of struggling in the subcontinent conditions and Vaas, the 38-year-old left-arm medium pacer, who took 355 wickets in 111 tests for Sri Lanka before his retirement from international cricket in 2011, agreed to provide technical advice to them on the tour. The preceding limited-overs series between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754, comprising five One Day Internationals and a one-off T20 International, was largely marred by the inclement weather. The monsoon rains washed out the only T20I and the first and final ODI, alongside disrupting the remaining four games, and is set to hamper the Test series opener too.

"Both teams are in the same boat, and the weather will probably play its part over the next two matches," said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915. "You can prepare to play, I guess switching on and off is going to be a crucial part of this game. It's rained everyday so far in the afternoon, and we'll have to factor that into our preparations and into the match," added the middle order batsman.
The second Test will be played in Colombo from November 25.
