Tayshaun Prince stays with Detroit Pistons, Signs a four year contract – NBA Update
The NBA season is starting in two weeks time and naturally, free agency activities have picked up pace.
Friday was the day; team owners, agents and players had been waiting for.
Although the lockout was lifted two weeks ago, all the deals were scheduled to start on Friday as it marked the opening of training camps. And as was expected, it turned out to be a swamped day.
One of the headlines of the day featured Tayshaun Prince.
According to ESPN, Tayshaun Prince, who started his career with Detroit Pistons in 2002, and has been representing the same team since then, being an unrestricted free agent, preferred his old team and signed a $27 million four
years contract just few hours ago.
Talks were going on between him and the team for few weeks now and a decision had already been taken. That is the reason the contract was signed immediately on the opening day of free agency. Details are expected to come out later
in the evening.
Prince is considered as one of the better defenders in the league and has led his team Detroit to six Conference Final’s appearances so far. He is a consistent performer and except his rookie and sophomore year, he managed to
average consistently within 13’s and 14’s every season.
His best performance came in the NBA finals against Los Angeles Lakers back in the 04-05 season when he managed to completely neutralize Kobe Bryant through 5 games. He continued the good work the very next year, and led his team
to second NBA finals in as many years. This time though, the Pistons failed to beat San Antonio Spurs in the finals.
But, for his outstanding contributions in the team, he was offered a five years extension contract, which he gladly accepted. He averaged 14.1 points last season but Detroit failed to make any impression last season, for which
their coach John Kuester was also sacked.
Now, with a new coach in the form of Lawrence Frank, it will be interesting to see how he employs the veteran forward in the team. It will be good for both Prince and Frank to bond quickly, because with a four years contract, Prince
will definitely be the main player for Detroit in coming years.
