Tazahum geared up to conquer Sandown in John Dunlop Fortune Stakes
Sir Michael Stoute’s 4-year-old, Tazahum, delivered something very close to his best in a Group 3 event at York in late August. He was third in the big meeting, and the form he showed gives him leading prospects in the John Dunlop Fortune Stakes (Listed
Race), taking place at Sandown on Wednesday, September 19, 2012.
Owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum, the bay colt has a fine track record at Sandown. He won a Listed race here in last May, when beating Fury just by a nose. That was his second consecutive win at Sandown, as he won the Bet365.com Esher Cup (Handicap) ahead of the
class 1 victory.
On his sole start here this season, he did not look too impressive. Yet, it was not a disgraceful defeat for the skilful horse. In a very tough competition, Tazahum, under Tadhg O'Shea, finished fifth behind Afsare.
After suffering an unlucky in the Ambant Gala Stakes (Listed Race) here in July, the son of Redoute´s Choice turned the table, and ensured a comprehensive win at Newmarket at the start of last month. He justified his highest odds of 11 to 8, and seized the
top place by 1¾ lengths in the Adnams Copper House Distillery EBF Conditions Stakes.
A comprehensive win boosted up Tazahum’s confidence, which he utilised in the Group 3 Sky Bet Strensall Stakes at York a few weeks ago. Having shown a decent effort at the top level, the Shadwell Australia Ltd-bred certainly deserves plenty of respect.
Today’s class 1 meeting will see him locking horns with five speedy horses. The going is good to firm, which will not be a concern for him. As per the plan, the 1-mile 14-yard meeting is due to get started at 16:00 GMT. The ultimate champion will receive
a cash prize worth £18,714 .
Gabrial is likely to emerge as the second best, ahead of the admirable, Fulbright. The latter showed great attitude when finishing second in a Listed race at Haydock. Gabrial also has a good record in this kind of races.
Both 3-year-olds are in good rhythm, but it will be a herculean task for them to get the better of Tazahum. Good luck to all the horses.
