  1. This is NOTHING to  do with the router. You need no drivers for it. Do you have a network card? Or is it wireless? Either of these requires drivers installed for the card. If it is wireless you also need to ensure the card is turned on, and then to use the connection program for the card to search for your router, set the encryption key and connect.

  2. Sounds like your getting yourself a bit confused.

First - how do you link on your brothers Virgin connection ?

If your computer is set to assign IP automatically and he uses a router or Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) then you plug in and your connection is automatic. The simplest set up is if he has a DSL (Cable) router, this will allow several computers to link up, Virgin media normally authenticate the first MAC address connected as the only device that can link, so any router connected may need to have its MAC address changed in the router (most routers allow this and some call it MAC spoofing), the DSL modem will then think the same computer is linked up and allow the connection to the router, then everyone plugs in.

You then go home and don't link up - your hardware must be correct i.e functional but how do you connect at home ?

Your netgear is an ADSL modem as long as thats also set to provide DHCP and your computer is left in automatic mode it should connect fine - the ADSL router provides the connection, the PC doesn't really know the router is there, it simply connects to a network device - the router provides a default link to the internet called a gateway.

Do it that way first, make sure your computer is set to anything you plug it into will be the DHCP and DNS server this way your computer will allow itself to be configured automatically and with minimum of fuss.

If you do IPCONFIG /ALL it will show the current IP configuration for your network card - the routers are normally something like 192.168.0.1 or 1.1 at the end, your computer will be something else like 192.168.0.100 or similar, look for these numbers, the router IP will show as the default gateway.

Also make sure your not shutting your computer down into standby or hibernation mode, this is a common issue, you then go home, link back up and your Internet connection has effectively changed but the computer may not realize.

Issue a "IPCONFIG /RELEASE" and "IPCONFIG /RENEW" to release and renew your DHCP lease if thats the case.
