Te Haumi Maxwell claims Men 50m freestyle gold: Day one – 2012 NSW Metropolitan Championships
Te Haumi Maxwell of SOSC claimed gold medal of the Long Course 50m freestyle swim in Men Open category on primary day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) Metropolitan Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday, March 3.
The Metropolitan Championship was of considerable importance as it offered a chance to all age group swimmers to race with each other in their respective events.
The 17-year-old Maxwell went full rampant in the Men’s 50m event. With his remarkable effort in the playoff, he remained prominently ahead of his challengers throughout the single lap event and stepped on the medal rostrum for gold medal.
With his tremendous efforts, he crushed all struggles of his challengers and hit the finishing end with the timing 23.07 seconds for gold medal. Maxwell’s impeccable timing was 0.11 seconds faster from his previous mark of 23.18 seconds, which he made during
2010.
He was followed by 25-year-old Tom Miller of CRAN, who remained 0.45 seconds behind his foregoing finisher and tapped the finishing wall with an effort of 23.52 seconds for silver medal. The third spot of the event was secured by Luke Herzog of Cherrybrook,
who was only 0.32 seconds behind his former finisher and ended his sprint in a time of 23.84 seconds.
On the other hand, Olivia Halicek dominated Women’s 50m freestyle. The 23-year-old Halicek posted an effort of 25.58 seconds for gold medal. She was 0.21 seconds under her own record of 25.79 seconds, which she set during 2010.
Halicek was trailed by Melissa Mitchell of MQU, who was just 0.18 seconds behind and completed her sprint in a time of 25.76 seconds for silver medal. The 24-year-old Mitchell remained marginally ahead of Ellen O’ Rourke of Cherrybrook, who stayed 0.10 seconds
apart and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal with the timing of 25.86 seconds.
Furthermore, Maxwell and Halicek were overjoyed with their title claiming efforts in the 50m discipline while the winners collected their accolades at the medal ceremony of the championship. In addition, the session ended after the conclusion of all planned
events.
