Question:

Tea Cup Dandies Piglettes?

by  |  earlier

My cousin and I were wanting to buy a tea cup dandie as our pet. We are wondering if a) you can buy these pigs in either the UK or in Canada and b) how big do they actually get? because the mothers look so much larger than the piglettes. Can you just get the piglettes and keep them small? or... well how big should we expect it to get?

thanks for the help

  1. I'm not sure where to buy or where they are legal, but I did find this article which I found quite informative.

It does state that there is no such thing as a miniature pig.  Breeders that claim this generally underfeed the pigs so they don't grow--which is wrong.   The article also talks about housing, behaviour, diet, and of course the reality of owning a pig.

This is an interesting site too:

    Good luck.

  2. There are pigs that are much smaller than farm pigs, but you're still talking about the difference between a 200 pound pig and a 1000 pound pig.

Anything sold as a miniature/micro/teacup pig will likely be somewhere between 100 and 200 pounds as an adult.

There aren't any "small" pigs. There are only "smaller" pigs, and none of them are really well suited for indoor pets. Pigs can be great if you have lots of land, space, and time to care for them and keep the happy, but that's not the reality for most people who try to keep them as pets. Pigs are intelligent and when they get bored, they can be very destructive and even aggressive.

  3. They get pretty big!!!
