Question:

Tea Rooms in NYC?

Does anyone know of a good tea room or trendy/themed cafe in the city. I am thinking of taking some of my college friends to a place like this for dessert and tea/coffe (they aren't big alcohol drinkers so...) when they come to visit me next month. Thanks.

  1. A few immediately come to mind:

Alice's Tea Cup on 64th Street off Lexington.  It's a charming little place with homemade scones, muffins and other bakery items. There are also a few other locations around the city, but 64th Street is the one I know.

Lady M Confections - Martha Stewart has been known to rave about this place.

City Bakery is a trendy place and their hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows is fabulous though they're pretty expensive.

There is also Serendipity 3 on East 60th Street off 2nd Avenue.  It's super popular, so much so that there is usually a crowd gathered outside waiting to get in, but if you go during off hours (lunchtime) you can usually get in with a shorter wait.  Loads of celebs go to this place for the famous frozen hot chocolate dessert and the $1000.00 (yes, one thousand dollar) Golden Sundance Sundae that is actually made with real edible gold leaf (amongst other things).  They have a full menu though but a lot of people just go for tea and dessert.

They're not cheap, but it's such a coup to get in at all, that it may be worth it for bragging rights.

  2. For great coffee and pastries:  Payard Bistro on Lexington and 73rd Street

Another place that serves wonderful coffee and cakes is 71 Irving Place - good service and they don't mind if you keep the table for a long time - lovely place to take friends.

  3. Chanteus gave you some great suggestions.

I also like Le Pain Quotidien which has great tea, coffee, and snacks, and a cool communal table so you can meet fun New Yorkers.
