Do you have any ideas that I can get a teacher to pronounce my name correctly before calling roll on the first day of school?

Just to save the embarrassment?

  1. I had a good friend in high school whose real first name was "Alfred" but was completely mortified by that name and prefered to be called "Billy". Before classes started on the first day he went up to all of the teachers and told them about it. They were all completely understanding and was never called Alfred in class.

So, definitely, approach your teacher before class or at the beginning of the day and tell her how to pronounce your name (maybe even write it down for her)

  2. Since roll is usually called in alphabetical order, anticipate when yours will come up and just say "It's ______ - lots of people have problems with it."

  3. DO you have a  nickname?

  4. go up to the teacher before class starts and tell her your name and pronounce it for her.

  5. Just go up to the teacher first thing in the morning on the first day of school and explain this to her.  Teachers hate to pronounce names incorrectly and start off on the wrong foot with a student just as much as kids hate for it to happen (I'm a teacher myself...and I've encountered this problem many times).  If she doesn't seem to have time to talk or says "in a minute" (the first day is pretty hectic for us too), just write a note and slip it to her before she begins roll call.

Also, if your school has a "meet the teacher" day or a time when you meet teachers at registration, you can tell her then.

One more suggestion...when the teacher is calling roll and you know your name is next, when she hesitates (because she's trying to figure out the pronunciation) just jump right in and say the name for her.  I promise she'll appreciate it.

  6. As a teacher, I would prefer my student to let me know in private (to avoid any teasing) that you have a unique name. I would provide each of your teachers with a phonetic spelling of our name so instead of you telling them 5 times how to pronounce it, they can have a visual as well.

  7. Well, kindly take her to the side and tell her that most people laugh at it when your name is missed pronounced although i do not think you should worry because most teachers pronounce most students name wrong. You definatly will not be the onlii one.
