Question:

Teacher as a career as a military wife?

I'm on the way to getting my joint bachelors in elementary education/ESE education/ESOL education. My fiance decided to join the air force and he gets shipped off to basic in about 4 months (it was a mutual deciscion, not like he just up and signed). I'm giong to school online as it is so it's not like that will be a problem. But I'm wondering if this is a good job for a military wife since they have to relocate so much.

I know I have other career options other than just teaching, I was just wanting to know how *ESE* teaching could be a transferrable career since that is what I really want to do.

  1. Here's a site with info on teaching at DoD schools, schools that are on base : http://www.dodea.edu/offices/hr/employme...

Here's a site with info on any and all jobs working for the government. In my opinion it's easier for me to have a government job rather than a "regular" civilian job because of my husband being AD AF....we're moving every 3-5 years.

Government jobs offer practicly the same benefits that military members get minus the healthcare but hey, you're covered already. When my husband PCS's I can put in for a transfer and keep my retirement and vacation time oh and they have slots anywhere and everywhere your husband might be stationed...even overseas, yes even Iraq.

Oh and like SO mentioned above....it is hard to be a teacher as a military wife....most stick to working in daycare (Child Development Center or private) or as a sub. On base jobs are very limited.

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY AND GOOD LUCK!!

  2. You chould possibly work as a teacher on base. but you should look into the reciprocity arrangement your state has with other states. So you could see if your certificate is transferable from one state to another. I know they offer different retirement packages for transient teachers. i'm not a teacher myself but have been told this by other teachers.

  3. Ok. is it a good career? Yes. For a Military wife? Not so much. I guess it really depends on how often you get "moved". You can probably teach on the base, but, i doubt seriously that you will be able to find anything in the public sector ONLY BECAUSE of the "nature of the beast".

I think you need to talk to more people about it that are "in the know".
