Hello. I am getting married in october or november of 2009. Hopefully, I will have a full time teaching job by then. My question is about the day i get married on. First I want to say that I am not taking my honeymoon till thanksgiving break so i will only have to take one or two days off. However, I was thinking about getting married on a Sunday becuase of the money that I can save. However, I am wondering if it would be ok to take monday off from school when i am taking two days off in November? It will be my first year and I am not sure what is acceptable. Thanks!

    stick it to the man

  2. You should be fine, just let them know ahead of time. You are entitled to a life, too.

  3. I would be happy to offer you some advice!  I am a professional teacher, and I am currently living in China.  My wife and I married about a year ago.  I had previously lived in Alaska.  Our first daughter, Isabella, was born on February 27th, 2008.  Now . . .

When my wife gave started to give birth on a Tuesday night, everyone completely understood when I took off of work for three days.  I then also had the weekend to be up at the hospital with my wife and newborn daughter.  It is a decision I will never--never--regret!

You should definitely take off.  Marriage, like having kids, is very important!  If your employer does not understand, then it is not a good place to be at.  However, I think you will most likely find that your principal will.  I know I would certainly take off, and having served in an administrative capacity before, I would certainly let any of the teachers working under me take off!  Go for it!  :-)

    Good luck!!!

  4. it depends on the school district you work for...you have a certain # of personal/sick days each year and they are going to encourage you to schedule things around your classes...taking the monday after your wedding off won't be a big deal, but i know that most school districts do not allow you to take time off right before or after a holiday... so you might run into a problem with your thanksgiving plans, it would be a bad idea to have a negative attendance record your first year of teaching because you are on probation and can be dismissed "for cause"...plan something over the summer or a longer break during the year...
