Question:

Teacher licensure going from North Carolina to New York State.?

I am currently an art education major in my senior year at a very well respected university in North Carolina. I would like to begin teaching next August, however due to some circumstances which have just come up, I am going to need to move to New York state directly after my graduation in May. My question was, does anyone know what extra steps I would need to take in order to get my teaching license in NY? I had originally planned on teaching in NC for 3 years, getting my national certification, and then moving, but it turns out I can't wait that long. Is it even possible to directly get my licensing in NY state? Thanks in advance to all who answer.

  1. Go to this website on reciprocity between states regarding teacher certification.  Both New York and North Carolina are NCATE certified states, so I would be surprised if they did not have reciprocity.  If they do, you won't be asked to take New York's teacher certification test, etc.   I would check into this by calling the New York Department of Education.

  2. This Web site gives you all the information you should need about getting certified in New York:

If it turns out that you cannot get everything in place in time to find a job this summer, please consider teaching in a private school, at least temporarily.  I know a number of teachers who found private schools to be a good transition for them, because the class size tends to be smaller.  They worked toward certification and then moved into higher-paying public school jobs.

I hope this helps.  I wish you very good luck, because we need all the dedicated teachers we can find.
